Could a Plant Compound Support Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?
If you've ever coped with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs count to your daily ease of movement and mobility. Now, exciting new research is looking at a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the cushion-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by easing a specific inflammation pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in removing worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration activity.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different angle. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin demonstrates potential as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
While more research is needed before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings contribute to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can play a supportive role alongside non-invasive, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's own healing.
