Ashburn PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

Hip fracture and GERD. We often write how everything in the body is linked. Here is another example. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often prescribed for many Ashburn reflux sufferers. Sadly, these PPIs may cause pain elsewhere, specifically the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Ashburn chiropractor closely monitors our patients who report hip pain, particularly if they are taking PPIs, as often chiropractic treatment helps alleviate hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is elevated in PPI users. Whether users take a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those on a high dose were at even greater risk for hip fracture. Researchers warn that doctors and patients must realize this in order to be cautious in recommending PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in knowing what the appropriate use of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk minced no words: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They open their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which inspired them to study if this were true. They found participants who were 40 years of age and over and had been prescribed PPIs for a minimum of 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. Their study revealed that fractures developed more often in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk associated with PPI use increased the more time they were on them. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Ashburn hip pain sufferers find relief with chiropractic care. As Dr. Robert Hayden explained in a new Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who sought care for spine, hip or shoulder pain reported less pain after 4 months than those who visited a medical doctor…and their costs were less! (3,4) Hip pain is a usual complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, specifically in patients over 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (particularly gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and such are common ways to treat and relieve hip pain. Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn will set up the proper approach to manage your Ashburn hip pain!
