Ashburn Nutrition Approaches for Degenerated Discs: Broccoli, Aloe and Grapeseed Oil

Who knew? Researchers are a fascinating breed. How they come up things to experiment with is a fascination! What would prompt them to think “grapeseed oil, aloe vera gel, and broccoli may help disc degeneration” is a marvel to Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn and surely to our Ashburn chiropractic patients, but a good marvel! They just might be onto something to deal with discs that are degenerated which trigger back pain, neck pain, and disturbance of life.

PREVENTING AND POSSIBLY REVERSING DISC DEGENERATION

Ashburn low back pain is very closely associated with degeneration of the intervertebral disc in the spine.  At its basic level, the Ashburn degenerated disc is recognized for a decreased number of cells and change to its tissue and extracellular matrix content. In many studies, rabbit discs are studied as they are like human discs. In one rabbit study, researchers studied the degenerated intervertebral disc and its response to the use of broccoli sprout extract. They proposed and their study found that this extract had restorative and preventive influences on degenerated discs. (1) In second rabbit study, grapeseed extracts were put on degenerated discs. Due to their having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as natural flavonoids, grapeseed extracts were tested to find out how their inhibitory and anabolic effects would be on degenerated discs. They showed to be restorative and preventive in terms of stopping the degradation of disc tissues’ collagen fibrils. (2) In a third study, aloe vera gel was applied to degenerated discs of rabbits. Aloe vera gel stopped and reversed disc degeneration. Researchers wrote that there was a statistically significant (a big deal!) gradual reversal of degenerative changes. These modifications were noted in the collagen content organization, the nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus cell increase, and degree of disc degeneration. (3) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn will keep following these stimulating studies and see how they will translate into human use. Maybe these results will inspire Ashburn chiropractic patients to enjoy more broccoli, utilize grapeseed, and find a way to enjoy some aloe vera gel?
