Ashburn CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and usually considered a back muscle as it stretches from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum triggers lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Several bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and stop back pain. (6) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Ashburn chiropractic visit to Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn.
